a signed seat

The old desk, still wearing it’s proud Greenie seat, sat unmoved in the front row.

The least-loved desk in the whole room even though it offered the best view, fewer distractions, and the most leg room.

It has never neglected its duty
as new freshmen come each year

to tip it, sit on it, spill or draw on it,
and even to sleep on the old desk.

But, in spite of all the abuse and use,
there is one thing this desk offers
that makes it all worth it:
educational opportunity.

It says,
“There is a place for you to learn and work.”
“You are welcome.”
“You belong.”

That stubborn, old desk outlasts everything

because
You are worth it.
